Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Hatred and Lies

Ann Landers warned: “Hate is like acid. It can damage the vessel in which it is stored as well as destroy the object on which it is poured.”
A Trump supporter has claimed liberal Democrats are: “neo-Nazi of the free-speech hating left.”  Actually, genuine liberals encourage freedom of speech.  Fascist do not.
Most people who write letters to the editors attempt to be persuasive, but it doesn’t seem to be the goal of President Trump’s angry supporters.  They’re ventilating their anger and appear to hate those who don’t agree with them.  Many indulge in deceitful over-generalizations and lies.
Republican presidential nominee Trump preached hatred and religious bigotry to eager listeners.  Cruel chauvinists want to restrict women’s rights, and the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens.  Hatred goes much deeper today than many white Christian Americans want to admit.
This newspaper’s conservative columnist Chuck Pinkey boasted: “The Right has over 300 million guns and a trillion rounds of ammunition.”  What does the Right intend to do with that ammunition?  Could an armed rebellion be the reason they’ve opposed background checks all along?
Thomas Jefferson explained: “He who permits himself to tell a lie often finds it much easier to do it a second and third time, til at length it becomes habitual; he tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world’s believing him.  This falsehood of the tongue leads to the heart and in time depraves all its good dispositions”
President Trump is afflicted with the “falsehood of the tongue” syndrome.  Consequently, it’s crucial that genuinely liberal Democrats disclose the truth, practice the Golden Rule, and calmly carry on.
Until, congressional Republicans demonstrate compassion for the sick and poor, liberal Democrats must continue submitting civil, factual and persuasive letters.
