Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

ISIL, aka ISIS

Fifteen of the nineteen perpetrator on 9/11, were Saudi Arabian Sunni Muslims.  None were Shiites from Iraq or Iran.  The fact is that 60 percent of the people in Iraq are Shiites, and only 20 percent are Sunni.

In retrospect removing Saddam Hussein was a victory for Iran, because his regime had kept the pro-Iranian Shiite majority repressed.  Instead of freedom, Iraq disintegrated into a Sunni-Shiite civil war that has spread instability throughout the region.

ISIL, aka ISIS fighters that overran Iraq were a creation of the Iraq war.  They gained strength in numbers in the midst of the cauldron of violence that was unleashed by the Iraq war.

Congressional Republicans ignore the fact that the withdrawal plan from Iraq was put in place by President Bush.  The Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq required, that it be approved by the Iraqi parliament, but our Congress was never consulted.  Bush signed the deal requiring our combat troops to be out by 2011, and congressional Republicans didn’t complained at that time.

In 2010, Iraqi Shiite politicians refused to grant our troops immunity from prosecution.  At first, Iraq’s Prime Minister Abadi a Shiite didn’t want our combat troops in Iraq.  Consequently, Obama urged the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds to come together to defeat ISIL on the ground.

Keep in mind that what happened in Mosul was that 30,000 Iraqi troops turned and fled in the face of 800 ISIL fighters.  Those troops were mostly Sunnis, who had no desire to risk their lives, for what they consider to be a completely Shiite dominated government hostile to their interest.  It’s doubtful that leaving a residual force of American military trainers could have done anything to prevent their advance.

In 2015, twenty thousand Iranian Shiite militiamen fought ISIL to retake Tikrit.
