Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

I received the following message from Will Fischer, the Director Government Affairs & Iraq War Veteran of VoteVets.org :

“President Donald Trump released a budget with increases in Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense funding paid for by slashing services for the poor, medical research, education funding and more services that working families across this country rely on.
“As those who served in uniform, we cannot be more clear: we will not accept increases to Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense budgets on the backs of the poor, seniors, and the security and safety of the American people.
“We will not allow Donald Trump to pit veterans and military families against everyone else.
“We are going to fight against these dramatic cuts.  And because of the nature of Trump's budget, there are is no more important voice in this debate than America's veterans.  But we can't do it alone.
“We can pay for an increase in force structure, and more resources at the Veterans Affairs, while keeping important programs intact for seniors, working Americans and those Americans facing hard times.  We can also fund programs that build alliances overseas, and prevent the climate disaster that General Mattis has deemed a top national security threat.  But that's not what Donald Trump's budget does.
“We put our lives on the line to protect the people this budget hurts.  And we stand ready to fight for them.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden once said: "Don't tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I'll tell you what you value.”

The budget that President Donald Trump has proposed is a cruel document that will inflict pain on millions of American families, and that includes the families of many veterans.
