Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Can’t Imagine

The Oneonta Daily Star published the following letter to the editor, that was submitted by Bruce Dunn of Butternuts.
“Like Cornell West, I’m a radical democratic socialist and want to comment on Chuck Pinkey’s reference to John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine.’  He thinks it is a national anthem for those Americans whom he calls progressives.  It is more than that.  It has become an anthem for forward-looking, forward-thinking individuals around the world.  Every continent, every country, every person over the age of 10 is familiar with the song and its sentiment.”
“Pinkey simply cannot ‘imagine’ someone with a valid point of view other than his own.  Some of the people I most love and respect are believers, but I am not.  I live for today, in the present, with an eye toward the future and do not believe in heaven or hell.  Will I live tomorrow?  Well, I just can’t say, but I don’t live in the past.  There is nothing so constant as change, though it is too scary for some.”
“Chuck cannot ‘imagine’ a brotherhood of man, people living in peace, as one.  The world is armed to the teeth with a handful of countries having nuclear weapons.  The population of the Earth has tripled in the past 70 years.  We are seven billion strong with dwindling resources.  If we don’t learn to get along, we will end us.  He claims to be a follower of the prince of peace, yet can’t ‘imagine’ it.  He is so full of fear and violence he can’t see what you and I can see.  Such a mean, old man, can’t ‘imagine’ no possessions.  Didn’t Christ say leave your possessions and follow me?
“John Lennon was a hugely talented and successful artist.  He was a man of the people and gave more of himself through his art than anyone ever has.”
Chuck Pinkey is by far the most radical and divisive conservative columnist employed by The Oneonta Daily Star.
