Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Attacking the CBO

Obviously, the White House and House Republicans are attempting to delegitimize the Congressional Budget Office.

Democratic lawmakers are waiting for the nonpartisan and highly respected CBO to issue its report regarding the “Obamacare” replacement bill.  The CBO report will detail how much the new legislation will cost and how many millions of people stand to lose health coverage.  Trump’s White House and House Republican lawmakers anticipate the CBO report won’t be favorable to bill that they’ve already passed, so they’ve begun to actively delegitimize the agency's credibility.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters: "If you're looking to the CBO for accuracy, you're looking in the wrong place."

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise announced that he doesn't want to let unelected bureaucrats in Washington slow down the Republican promise to repeal and replace Obamacare.  He insisted: "We're not going to wait."

Democratic Congressman Sandy Levin noted during the Ways and Means Committee meeting: "You're fearful that the CBO will provide answers to questions that you don't like.  So essentially, you want essentially a sneak attack on this issue before the public hears and we hear from CBO.”

Republicans insist that the CBO hasn't always been on the mark, particularly when it comes to health care and Obamacare.  The CBO has been nonpartisan, and highly respected.

In 2015, Republicans appointed the current director, Keith Hall.  Back then-House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price, who is a member of Trump's cabinet working on replacing Obamacare argued: "Keith Hall will bring an impressive level of economic expertise and experience to the Congressional Budget Office.  His vast understanding of economic and labor market policy will be invaluable to the work of CBO and the important roll it will continue to play as Congress seeks to enact policies that support a healthy and growing economy."
