Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Dan Gomes

The Oneonta Daily Star has published the following letter, that was submitted by Dan Gomes of Schenevus.

“Trump’s fact-free populist rhetoric may have won him the White House, but it looks like the horse he rode in on is being outed for what it really was — a Trojan horse, wheeled in by fawning foot soldiers, but, in its belly a cargo of swamp-building CEOs, Wall Street power brokers, and a wannabe female Svengali.

“After years of poorly answered attacks on main street media by the far-right, which served to till the fields for news gatekeepers like AM talk radio and FOX News, the time was ripe.

“Along came The Donald on his dark horse, with his Obama-bashing, fire-spitting Twitter account, and the Republican tent went up in flames.  Desperate and out of the running, Republicans chose to make a deal with the devil.

“Now that he is president … Trump’s obsessive-seeming outrages about the news media’s alleged schemes to delegitimize his presidency are in fact just a continuation of his long-cherished “I know you are but what am I?” schoolyard tactic to, in turn, delegitimize the media.  It’s a maneuver that has served him well in the past — heaven help us.

“Example: If caught lying, just brand your opponent an even bigger liar every chance you get!

“But I don’t want a serial-liar president — one who first needs to be interpreted by professional sycophants in order to know what to take figuratively and what to take literally; or what weight to give facts vs. 'alternative facts,' or when to doubt or believe science … intelligence agencies … the media … your lying eyes; or when strongly held principles are genuine and not just political posturing.'

“Cynics will say; 'Then doesn’t that eliminate most politicians?  That’s why I voted for Trump!'

“Perhaps … but soon, many voters will certainly be putting 'billionaire salesman' back on their DISQUALIFIED LIST.”
