Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Where Are You

Yesterday, Senator Elisabeth Warren pointed out, that during his presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”  At the time many congressional Republicans seemed to agreed that it was not acceptable in our United States of America.

Senator Warren noted that Speaker Paul Ryan had declared that “a religious test for entering our country is not reflective of America’s fundamental values.  I reject it.”  So Warren asks: “Where are you now Paul Ryan?  Have you rejected President Trump’s order to impose a religious test for entering our country?  Have you introduced a bill to overturn it?  You have the power.  Where are you?

Next, Elisabeth Warren revealed, that as governor of Indiana, Vice President Mike Pence said: “calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional.”  So Warren asked: “Where are you right now, Vice President Pence?  Have you called to overturn President Trump’s offensive and unconstitutional order?  Have you asked Republicans to introduce a bill to overturn it?  You have a platform.  Where are you?’

Then, she disclosed, that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called a Muslim ban: “completely and totally inconsistent with American values.  So, Senator Warren asked McConnell: “ Where are you right now, Mitch McConnell?  Have you rejected President Trump’s Muslim ban that is completely and totally inconsistent with American values?  Have you introduced a bill to overturn it?  You have the power.  Where are you?”

Senator Warren insisted: “President Trump ignored these Republican leaders and today these Republican leaders will not stand up for what is right.  While Trump’s executive order targeting Muslims and refugees is now a stain on America’s image, it has had the consequence of uniting millions of people around the globe and bringing Democrats together in total opposition to the new president.

Senator Warren believes: “President Trump may be willing to ignore the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and the Republican leadership in Congress may be willing to ignore the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, but the American people are not.”
