Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Immigration Enforcement

A Pew Center report showed that the number of undocumented immigrants coming from Mexico declined after the recession of 2008.  In 2011, Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed 396,906 illegal immigrants, the largest number in the agency's history.  In 2013, another record high for deportations was set, with about 400,000 persons per year, many of whom were criminals.  Obama was criticized by Hispanic-American leaders for an overall increase in deportations of illegal aliens.

In December of 2008, President Bush had signed the William-Wilberforce Trafficking Victim’s Protection Act, to ensure unaccompanied children from Central America, where thousands of children were fleeing violence were protected.  It’s a bipartisan law to protect children by giving them an immigration hearing.  Technically it applies only to unaccompanied minors, and it doesn’t provide automatic asylum.

In 2014, Congressman Gibson joined a chorus of Republican voices in opposing President Obama’s plan to extend protection to unaccompanied minors, as well as young immigrants brought into the country as children.  He accused President Obama of selectively choosing not to enforce the law, something presidents are duty bound to do by their oath of office.  Our representative in Congress didn’t understand the concept of prosecutorial discretion.

President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security has been “selectively choosing,” from 11 million undocumented immigrants to deport criminals, not families with children.  Gang members, not hard working mothers who are providing for their children.  They’ve been prioritizing, just like law enforcement agencies do every day throughout our nation.

Deportations of criminals are up 80 percent.  Obama deported more undocumented immigrants than Bush ever did.  The number of deportations each year has more than tripled.  During the first year of the Obama’s presidency the number undocumented immigrants deported was almost 100,000 more than during the last year of the Bush presidency.  Obama followed immigration laws.
