Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Harming America

The Oneonta Daily Star recently published the following letter to the editor, that was submitted by Andrew Reinbach of Burlington, N.Y.
“There are clearly people who insist that Donald Trump should be the next president of the United States.  And they seem delighted that he is getting under the left’s skin.
“It’s not so much that Trump is getting under ‘the left’s’ skin.  It’s just that most Americans believe that Russian agents, unwitting or otherwise, have no business running for POTUS, and Michael Morrell, the former head of the CIA and a political independent, says Donald Trump is an unwitting Russian agent.
“Likewise, most Americans usually listen when 50 retired members of our national security apparatus — all Republicans — say electing Donald would put the United States in serious danger.
“We believe that the president of the United States should honor his oath of office and ‘preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.’  Donald Trump, on the other hand, keeps promising he won’t do that.
“We don’t think a candidate for POTUS should be the business partner of a man named Felix Satter, a man convicted of felony stock fraud in the U.S., did time for driving a broken wine glass stem into a man’s face, and was accused by American diplomats of laundering funds for Iran.
“We don’t think a candidate for POTUS should have been either found guilty of, or settled claims of, being dishonest 236 times — one every other month for 30 years.
“And we think that no candidate for POTUS is special, and, like every candidate since Richard Nixon, should show us his or her taxes and detailed medical reports.  Mr. Trump says he can’t release his taxes because he’s under audit, but that didn’t stop Richard Nixon.
“In short, people supporting Donald Trump are trying to harm the United States, whether or not they realize it.”
