Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Governor Susana Martinez

The latest conflict escalation between Donald Trump and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, who is the Republican Party's best-known Latina elected official erupted after the governor said that she was too busy to attend a Trump event in her state.

At that event, Trump blamed Martinez for a growing number of food stamp recipients and for New Mexico's response to the federal government's resettlement of Syrian refugees in the state.

He told his supporters in Albuquerque: "We have to get your governor to get going.  She's got to do a better job, OK?  Your governor has got to do a better job.  She's not doing the job.

"Hey!  Maybe I'll run for governor of New Mexico.  I'll get this place going.  She's not doing the job.  We've got to get her going.  Come on, let's go, governor."

Trump later said "Syrian refugees are being relocated in large numbers to New Mexico.  If I was governor, that wouldn't be happening."

It's not just a fight between Trump and a prominent Republican Latina, because Martinez is also the chairwoman of the Republican Governors Association, who has the task electing GOP governors in November, with Trump leading the party on the ballot.

Gov. Martinez’s spokesperson, Mike Lonergan hit back at Trump after those remarks in Albuquerque.  Lonergan pointed out: “The pot shots weren't about policy, they were about politics.  And the governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate until she is convinced that candidate will fight for New Mexicans.

“Governor Martinez doesn't care about what Donald Trump says about her -- she cares about what he says he will do to help New Mexicans.  She's disappointed that she didn't hear anything about that last night."

Not unlike Senator Warren of Massachusetts, Governor Susana Martinez won't be bullied by an arrogant billionaire.
