Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Like Abortion

Actually, none of our presidential candidates like abortion.  Democratic  candidates believe that women should have a choice, and that every young women and teenage girls should have access to the most reliable contraceptive method.

Teen birth rates go down when people are given information and access to contraceptives.  Unfortunately, Republican religious zealots have focused on social issue instead of health issue, and aren’t looking at what is in the best interest of individual children and the community.  Republican politicians want to eliminate that choice by forbidding abortions, and limiting women’s reproductive choices.

Colorado reduced unintended pregnancy and the abortion rate of teenage girls, by making it convenient for young women to get the most reliable contraceptive method, namely IUDs, irrespective of their ability to pay.  In five years, Colorado was able to drop their teen birth rate by 40 percent, and teen abortion rate by 35 percent.  For every dollar spent on the contraceptives, Colorado’s Family Planning Program saved $5.68 cents in Medicaid costs.  Colorado taxpayers saved $42.5 million in healthcare expenditures associated with teen births in 2010.

The National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association gave Colorado an award for having the premier public health program in the country.  The day after Colorado got that award, the Republicans controlled Colorado senate voted to cancel the program.

Most Americans believe that the heart wrenching decision regarding abortion should not be decided by the Supreme Court.  If the law is change, wealthy woman will have the option of taking a trip to Mexico, but dangerous back room illegal abortions will again be the only option for most women.

Emily’s List is an organization committed to electing Democratic women has doubled in size.  Lately, they’re hearing from women that the Republican war on women’s reproductive rights has got to stop.
