Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Carla Kraus

The Oneonta Daily Star published the following letter to the editor, that was submitted by Carla Krase of Berkeley, California.
“When my mother and father retired they built a simple house on a beautiful piece of property in Sidney.  After my father passed away, my mother continued to enjoy the property with its beautiful views overlooking farmland down the hill and lovely mountains in the distance.  My parents were very fortunate to live in such beauty and tranquility.  When my mother’s health declined and she moved to assisted living, we sold her house.
“The beautiful Catskills should be preserved.  They are a treasure.
“Unfortunately, there is a threat that two gas pipelines and compressing stations will be built in the area.  Not only will they ruin the peace, tranquility and beauty of the rural communities by industrializing them, but they will pose a serious environmental and safety threat.  Please note the explosion of an underground pipeline in San Bruno, California, which blew up an entire neighborhood, and the recent gas leak in Porter Ranch, California, which spewed methane of unprecedented proportions into the atmosphere for months.  It is not responsible to build pipelines to ship fracked gas to Canada for export overseas.  We need to move to renewable energy sources and stop our reliance on fossil fuels.
“‘This Changes Everything’ by Naomi Klein gives hope that communities can work together to fight the exploitation of the land.  ‘Dark Money’ by Jane Mayer shows how corrupt the system has become that allows such projects to proliferate in support of special interests despite community opposition.  I hope Gov. Cuomo’s administration will take the high road and show people it is possible to have their interests represented.  We need to believe we have a democracy.”
