Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

A Novel Idea

President Obama has weighed in on the Republican presidential primary race by saying attempts to blame him for the rise of Donald Trump’s popularity in the polls is "novel," but insisted, that it’s actually the Republican establishment and media who created an environment that a Trump candidacy could thrive in.
Our President got laughs during a joint press conference at the White House with Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau, when the he was asked about some Republicans blaming him for the rise of GOP presidential front-runner Trump.
He joked: "I have been blamed by Republicans for a lot of things, but being blamed for their primaries, and who they're selecting for their primary is novel.  Objectively, it's fair to say that the Republican political elites, and many of the information outlets, social media, news outlets and television stations have been feeding the Republican base for the last seven years."
Trump’s rivals to be the Republican party’s candidate for president Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz aren’t that different from the business mogul, when it comes to their policies on immigration.
Obama noted:"It's not as if there's a massive difference between Mr. Trump's position on immigration.  Mr. Trump just may be more provocative in how he says it, but the actual positions aren't that different.  Despite the fact that their (Cuban and Canadian) families are the products of immigration and the openness of our society."
Obama intends to defend his legacy by pointing to his most significant domestic achievement.  He’s proud that the Affordable Care Act has provided 20 million Americans with insurance coverage, which congressional Republicans have voted about 60 times to repeal.
Many congressional Republicans oppose his efforts to normalize relations with Cuba.  Nevertheless, he decided to become the first president to visit Cuba in almost 90 years.
