Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Stay Focused

Early actions to rescue the economy by Obama, congressional Democrats, and 3 Republican Senators set the stage for the longest streak of private sector job growth on record.  The unemployment rate has been cut in half.  It’s down to 5 percent.  Wages are growing faster than at any time since the recovery began.

Claiming that our economy is in decline is untrue.  Our auto industry was had its best year ever.  Manufacturing has created nearly 900,000 new jobs in the past six years.  That was accomplished while our deficits were cut by almost three-quarters.

Our economy started to change long before the recession hit and hasn’t stopped.  Robotic technology has replaced jobs on the assembly line, and that situation allows companies, who face tough competition in a global economy to locate anywhere.  Companies have less loyalty to their communities, and more wealth is being concentrated at the very top.

These realities have made it harder for a hardworking family to pull themselves out of poverty, and harder for young people to start their careers, but this isn’t unique for our country.  The Obama administration goal has been to grow an economy that works for everybody.  He recognizes that real opportunity requires everyone to get the education and training, that they’ll need to land a good-paying job.

Early childhood education has lifted high school graduation rates, but we must build on that progress, by providing Pre-K for every child, offering every student the hands-on computer science and math classes that make them job-ready, and recruit and support more effective teachers.

Providing two years of community college at no cost for responsible students is one of the best ways to improve our economy, and President Obama is committed to keep fighting to get that started in 2016.
