Mind and Destiny

“I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard ... I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins. It is righteousness that exalteth a nation while sin is a reproach to any people.”- Frederick Douglass

Spirit of Innovation

Over the past seven years, the Obama administration has nurtured the spirit of innovation.  They’ve protected an open internet, and taken steps to get more students and low-income Americans online.
Recently, Vice President Biden worked with Congress to give scientists at the National Institutes of Health the strongest resources they've had in over a decade.  Medical research should receive the same level of commitment as developing clean energy sources.
Anybody, who wants to dispute the science regarding climate change, will have to debate our military, most of America's business leaders, a majority of the American people, almost the entire scientific community, and 200 nations around the world who have agreed that climate change is a serious problem and needs to be solved.
In  2014, our planet was the warmest year on record, and 2015 turned out even hotter.  Seven years ago, our country made the single largest investment in clean energy in history.  Those investments have resulted in wind power becoming cheaper from Iowa to Texas than dirtier sources of energy.  On rooftops from Arizona to New York, solar panels are saving Americans tens of millions of dollars a year on their energy bills, and employs more American workers than coal mining, at a better than average salary.  Steps have been taken to give homeowners the freedom to generate and store their own energy.  And, we've cut our imports of foreign oil by nearly 60 percent, and cut carbon pollution more than any other country on Earth.
Climate change is just one of many issues where our security is linked to the rest of the world.  That is the reason we have to answer the important question of how to keep America safe and strong without either isolating ourselves or trying to nation-build everywhere there's a problem.
